Submitted by Amy Roe on Monday, August 31st, 02:30pm

A man working in a construction trench was trapped when a wall of the trench collapsed on him. Here's video of the rescue from KOMO's Air 4.

Breaking: worker buried in trench

Submitted by Amy Roe on Monday, August 31st, 01:55pm

A male worker is trapped after the wall of a construction trench he was working n collapsed. The trench, at 2413 35th Ave W, is reportedly about 15 feet deep and the man is buried to his thighs. He is alert and speaking with workers. The above picture is a still of the scene. We've got Air 4 out there and will have video up soon.

Smooth sailing on the Boulevard

Submitted by Kathi Goertzen on Friday, August 28th, 12:37pm

After years of a bone-crunching, car-crushing ride along a stretch of Magnolia Boulevard, it's finally smooth sailing..or at least smoother sailing.  The Seattle Dept. of Transportation has filled in several 'dips' in the pavement which had made for a bumpy ride in the northbound lanes of the Boulevard between Parkmont and Glenmont.  The City says some of the problems had been caused by 'failed repairs to utility projects'.  SDOT says they used 12 tons of asphalt to level off the surface in 4 places.  It's a  big improvement for one of Seattle's most scenic drives.

Smiles at Brown Bear are FREE

Submitted by Lisa Brooks on Thursday, August 27th, 10:20pm

As a birthday gift to its' customers, all 18 Brown Bear automatic car wash locations in Western Washington offered free car washes all day long--and smiles, as well as cars, were in abundance!

At the Interbay/Magnolia location, the lines were steady all day, but the smiling attitude of the employees never wavered.

Even as eight p.m., closing time neared, the lines stretched onto the street, but there were no frowns in sight.

Man hit with a pipe after failing to produce a cigarette

Submitted by Amy Roe on Wednesday, August 26th, 12:28pm

Was it a hate crime on nonsmokers? This from the SPD blog:

On August 25th at around 10:10 p.m., West Precinct patrol officers responded to a report of an assault in the 2200 block of Thorndyke Avenue West.  The victim and witnesses informed officers that a man had approached their car asking for a cigarette.  When they informed him that they didn’t have one, the suspect produced a pipe and struck the victim in the head.  The victim and the witnesses drove away from the suspect and called 911.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.  Seattle Fire medics responded and treated the victim’s injuries.  The witnesses brought the victim to a local hospital for additional medical care.

Magnolia cougar sighting?

Submitted by Amy Roe on Tuesday, August 25th, 01:52pm

Ian writes:

"I saw a full size cougar strolling down Government Way in Magnolia tonight around 10:15, it ducked down some stairs and into the woods, not sure if it's newsworthy but it was certainly amazing to see such a large cat so close!!"

Really? We see cougars all the time at Palisade.

Thorndyke couple surprise burglars, but they still get some items

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Saturday, August 22nd, 09:33am

A couple returning to their home on the 1500 block of Thorndyke Avenue W Friday night surprised two burglars who was going through their home, but they escaped.

According to the SPD, the two got home around 7:40 p.m. Friday and was in their garage when they heard the front door slam.  Then they saw someone running away from their home.

Responding officers searched the area and brought in a K9 unit, but they couldn't find the suspect.  Neighbors described them as two white males.  Before they left, they were able to steal some items from the home.

Disco Park John Doe: amnesia is hellish, terrifying

Submitted by Amy Roe on Friday, August 21st, 11:26am

The man who woke up in Discovery Park, apparently with amnesia, said the experience has been hellish and he's terrified he won't get his memory back. He spoke at a press conference this morning. We'll have more from EJ soon.

Above photo by Mike Siegel/The Seattle Times. A Seattle Times reader indentified the man in the photo as Edward Lightheart.
